See Us, Hear Us — Celebrate Asian Heritage Month with Elimin8Hate

Asian Heritage Month is an opportunity for us to celebrate and learn more about the contributions of Canadians of Asian descent throughout history that have shaped the social and cultural landscape of the Canada that we share today.

Do you know that there are over 63 different Asian ethnic groups across Canada, all with diverse and varied origins, journeys and stories? But Asians many times grouped together as one monolithic group and positioned as highly successful, docile, and submissive individuals. The Model Minority myth assumes that all Asian immigrants are hugely successful, while masking the underlying socio-economic problems facing different Asian communities. Such everyday and systemic level of stereotypes alienates and marginalizes Asians in Canada and takes a toll on the physical and mental wellbeing of our community.

To honor Asian Heritage Month, this year Elimin8Hate is launching “See Us Hear Us” and inviting Canadians of Asian descent and allies to speak up and acknowledge our unique and diverse stories to combat the Model Minority myth and microaggressions faced by our community. As Asian Canadian community tries to heal from the significant rise of Anti-Asian hate crimes in the past two years, it is all the more important for us to elevate Asian voices and celebrate Asian power. Our stories and experiences must be seen and heard.

This year, while we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of Asian Heritage Month in Canada, it is important to remember that the history of Asian communities in Canada dates back to the 19th century, with the first recorded immigration in 1858 to Fraser River and Barkerville, BC. As the diverse Asian Canadian history and experience has not always been recognized or represented, Elimin8Hate encourages you to use this celebratory event to combat unconscious biases and microaggressions that continue to haunt and harm the Asian Canadian community today.
